How Do I Choose a Therapist?

This is an important decision because you want to be able to address the issues efficiently, successfully and completely.  I encourage clients to ask questions of the therapist so that they can determine if it seems to be a good fit.  It's always helpful to be able to trust that this person has your best interest at heart and will help you reach your goals.

Here's a sampling of potential questions to ask:
  • Are you licensed?
  • How long have you practiced?
  • How long will treatment last?
  • What can I expect on my first visit?
  • How do I pay for treatment?
  • Tell me about confidentiality in your practice?
  • When do you schedule appointments?
  • What does a social worker do in treatment and how does that differ from a psychologist or psychiatrist?
  • Have you had any disciplinary actions from your licensing board?
  • Can you tell me about your training and expertise?
  • What types of problems do you address?
